Reach the desk

Corrections come first. If a figure on this site is wrong, or the document behind it has been superseded by a later edition, the useful message names the page, quotes the sentence and identifies the document you read against it. Every figure here is printed with the date of its source, which makes that kind of correction quick to settle: the file either stands behind the number or it does not.

A claim that cannot be supported is removed rather than softened into vagueness. A figure that turns out to answer a slightly different question from the one the sentence asked is replaced with a sentence saying what the document actually measures.

What travels well as a pitch

Pitches for reported pieces about health in Kansas are read at the same address. What works here is a subject with a document under it: an agency file nobody has read closely, a dataset with a county-level cut in it, a bill number and its committee record, a facility list that changed between two editions. What does not work is a summary of coverage that already exists somewhere else, or a subject that cannot be traced to the body that owns the record.

What the desk cannot do

The desk holds no license and speaks for no agency. It places no insurance, recommends no plan, and cannot answer a question about an individual's own coverage, bill or care. Those questions belong with the body that issued the document in front of you: the plan itself, the Kansas Insurance Department, KanCare, or a clinician.
